XRUK Fundraising Guidence for Local Groups
Fundraising is an essential act of support to keep XRUK Rebelling.
The following guidance is provided to help Local Groups ask for donations in different circumstances.
How to ask for donations in an email or a written document
Short Version 1:

Longer Version:
It costs a staggering £1 million to fund Extinction Rebellion UK for a year.
It’s only thanks to small donations from individuals like you that we can continue to fund actions, outreach, equipment, systems and more.
Every single donation helps us demand change. Together, we are unstoppable.

How to answer the question:
‘What does XR UK spend money on?’
Please bear in mind that Extinction Rebellion can only publicly ask for donations for legal purposes (e.g. not for glue or locks!). Fortunately, there are plenty of legal things we spend money on!
Every donation helps XR UK:
- Support volunteers with essential costs
- Run training talks to spread the news about the climate emergency
- Carefully plan attention-grabbing actions
- Pay for safe storage of equipment
- Maintain our website and communication tools
- Manage finances with accounting software and professional bookkeeping
- And so much more (Local Groups will be able to fill in the blanks here better than anyone, but examples include: refreshments at events, art supplies, transport costs).
How to ask for donations in person (during a talk/training/event)
Example addition to script for online donations:
We are only able to hold [talks/trainings/events] like this thanks to donations we receive from the public. It costs a staggering £1 million to fund Extinction Rebellion UK for a year. If you can support us to keep the rebellion alive, please make a one-off or a monthly donation at our website:
https://extinctionrebellion.uk/donate
A monthly donation is the best way to make sure we can keep the pressure up all year round.
(See ‘What does XR UK spend money on?’ above to help answer any questions)
Asking for donations on the street: what you need to know
If you are talking to the public primarily for reasons other than fundraising, you can add a suggestion to make a donation.
See ‘How to ask for donations in person (during a talk/training/event)’ above.
We recommend asking donors to give using our crowdfunding website Chuffed using the QR code above. This has several benefits. It will:
- enable us to track the source of donations,
- allow them to sign up to our mailing list at the same time, so we can keep it touch later
- be easier for them to sign up to donate to us monthly, which helps us plan.
If you are on the streets with the primary aim of raising money, there are a few more rules you need to know.
Risks and rules
- You could be fined £200 if you collect money without a licence. Most local councils require face to face fundraisers to have a licence. Find the relevant council here:
https://www.gov.uk/street-collection-licence
- As well as requiring a licence, there are a lot of rules about street fundraising, including those to protect vulnerable people. Anyone considering asking the public for money should make sure they understand the Institute of Fundraising’s code of practice on public collection
