Elections Action Pack | Intro
The local elections are close and this is the time to pick up public interest and carry it right through to the General Election.
It’s time to harness the despair and feelings of betrayal, to re-establish democracy and give people the power and influence.
This pack gives you everything you need in one place to take action to build connections with local people and groups on local issues.
Educate, inform and engage them in Community Assemblies and deliberative democracy in the build-up for the General Election.
Guidance from XRUK Political Circle
The focus on a UK-wide citizens’ assembly is for the following reasons:
- The Third Demand remains a core aspect of the Movement Strategy and Action Strategy.
- Beyond demanding that the UK government tell the truth and act now, XRUK has always held the position that it should not define how the climate and ecological emergency should be addressed. Rather, we are calling for an upgrade to the democratic system, whereby decisions on what should be done are made by ordinary people rather than by politicians alone, to determine long-term solutions that are fair, free of influence by vested interests, and in the best interests of the country as a whole.
- In this way, we avoid any debate in the run-up to the election about what and who represents “good” climate policy or which specific solutions should be favoured above others.
The Lib Dems (LDs), Greens and Plaid Cymru support the Climate & Ecology Bill (CE Bill), which includes a call for a UK-wide citizens’ assembly. Since the parties support this concept, there is an open door for a conversation about their supporting a UK-wide citizens’ assembly independent of the CE Bill.
Imagine we’re like a Wood Wide Web
The Mycleia Network is a shared economy, where ecosystems flourish without greed. The mycelium underfoot ensures their close-by neighbours have the resources (nutrients, water, etc.) they need to flourish. But they also have formed ways to distribute nutrients across their entire network.
