Closing Ceremonies
World Rivers Day - Sun 28 Sept
Let's close off this month of action with a bang.
World Rivers Day is a celebration of the worldβs waterways. It highlights the many values of rivers and strives to increase public awareness and encourages the improved stewardship of rivers around the world.
You could also close off with an ending, commitment or water ceremony and remind everyone that water is life.
You can delve in to the resources to find ideas to help you create a ceremony or you can use any of the ideas suggested for the rest of the month of action.
If you're feeling more negative and would rather mark the sad deterioration of your water source, you might also like to hold a funeral, or similar. Use this to spur you on to take local action to start to get your water source cleared up by creating noise and tackling your local water company. Then you can celebrate your progress at your Water Wedding in March 2026.
You can also leave bells and natural confetti such as petals, near the water source, or tie things like old boots (river rubbish) to things around town - or outside your local water company! Or why not set up a 'Catch of the Day' stand, to display all the litter you've found in and around your water source?
Let's close off this month of action with noise, colour, engagement and the enthusiasm to spend the next seven months working towards the world celebration of water in March.
