Email Accounts and Email Lists

There are two types of email to think about...

Email Accounts

An email account for people to have two-way conversations with you. This is the equivalent of your personal email account, but for your group instead. You could use a gmail etc free email account or you could apply for one from XRUK e.g. groupname@extinctionrebellion.uk.

The benefits of applying for one ending in extinctionrebellion.uk are:

  • if you ever lose access to it you can ask for a password reset
  • you can easily share access to it between a few people

Email Lists

An email list is where supporters can sign up and receive updates from you. This is one-way communication.

Your emails need toshould be "on message", and jargon-free, because therepeople willon alwaysyour list might be interested members of the public onwho yourare listnot yet invovled - and maybe a few journalists too.

But emails

Emails are more useful for internal comms: e.g. focussed emails telling people what's going on,on with dates/times/sign up links etc, or newsletter style roundups of everything that's happened recently.

This is probably the most reliable way to share news with people who want to hear from you. Emails tend to generate a good-sized response for an event, training, survey, talk or action - usually much better than messaging apps or social media.

XR uses a system called "Action Network" to store your list of email subscribers and send mass emails to them. It is funded centrally and available to all local groups. AlthoughYou Localcan Groupsread more in this Action Network overview.

Being part of this network.network Ithelps canyou initiallypick up more subscribers because you lists will be automatically promoted for you in a bit less user friendly than systems like MailChimp, but the benefits to you, your subscribers, and the restnumber of theways movement are HUGE.

Action Network is a "network" of mailing lists. In simple terms, the UK list comprises of Nation/Region lists which in turn comprise of Local Groups. All new sign ups within this system flow 'up' to the UK list which can then reach everyone around the movement.

This makes the Action Network a powerful way to communicate, engage and mobilise people with a wide variety of ‘asks’: from donating money, to signing up to open calls or roles fayres, or to mobilise for large actions. You can use 'forms' to help you sign people up to specific events as well as subscribing to the mailing list.

Local Group subscribe forms are promoted via 'Join Group' buttons on the- Localread Groupmore map on the UK websitehere and the website map tool on the Global website too. When someone joins the XRUK email list they get a welcome email encouraging them to sign up to their Local Group.
